How to Become a Hospital Volunteer at a Large Hospital Like Grady Health Care System

Volunteering for a hospital can be a very rewarding experience. Most hospitals and nursing homes have volunteer programs for men and women who are 18 years or older. Some health care volunteer programs also allow high school students to volunteer. For the purpose of this article, I will focus only on adult volunteering.

To be a hospital volunteer, you will need to fill out an application. The application will be very similar to an employment application. There will be questions on a volunteer application that will reveal a little bit about you, such as your full name, address, and contact information. You will be asked to submit your social security information, and possibly your driver’s license information also. You will need to supply at least two references with their contact information. It is good practice to ask the individuals you have chosen to be your references if they mind you listing them as your references. This will give the individuals an opportunity to accept or refuse your request. Asking in advance will also be a reminder to the individuals to be expecting a letter of reference submitted by the hospital in which you hope to work as a volunteer.

Each hospital and medical center will have their own policy for taking volunteer applications. For instance, to be a volunteer at a hospital, like Grady – in Atlanta, Georgia, you may fill out an application online, or you can download an application, fill it out and send it to them. To be a volunteer at Grady Health Care System you must have documentation of your immunizations. You should have evidence of a recent TB test and you also need to have documentation of your MMR vaccination. To read about volunteering at Grady Hospital in Atlanta see my article on Examiner.com.

Volunteering is all about service. You should have a clear idea of why you want to become a volunteer. If you hope to get your foot in the door as a volunteer to possibly be hired in the future, or if you hope to gain an internship, forget it. Your motive should be to serve the patients and the staff of the hospital you are volunteering for. You will be asked in your interview why you want to work as a volunteer. Be sure of what your motive for applying for the position is before answering. If your primary goal for becoming a volunteer is to get hired at a later date, you should reconsider becoming a hospital volunteer. Your interviewer may not want to hear that your motives are other than altruistic. Photo coursesy of Wikipedia.
