It can lead to hypertension and associated serious health complications like heart attack and stroke. Stress also causes peptic ulcers, impaired immune system, infertilty and much more. Modern research has also found connection between high levels of stress and high levels of blood sugar.

Here are some tips to combat stress and the associated health complications:

1. Switch over to green tea from black tea or coffee. Green tea naturally peps up the brain’s production of gamma-aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter that helps people feel calm, even in conditions of utter stress.

2. Indulge in hobbies that help you relax, such as shopping, gardening, walking a pet, etc, since these activities help in reducing the levels of cortisol, adrenaline and other stress hormones.

3. Researchers have found out that simply gazing at a beautiful beaches, forests, greenery, fields or other beautiful scenery stimulates the brain to produce electrical impulses that enhance feelings of relaxation and tranquility, which all contribute to lower stress levels.

4. As far as your diet is concerned, switch on from simple carbohydrates (white rice, white bread) to complex carbohydrates (whole grain bread, brown rice, brown bread), as simple carbohydrates are so rapidly absorbed by the gut that it triggers wild swings in blood sugar and that stimulates the adrenal glands to pump out an excess amount of stress hormones. But complex carbohydrates are absorbed a lot more slowly, so they keep blood sugar on a constant level and prevent sudden stress hormone surges.

5. Occasionally indulging in foot massage stimulates pressure points on the soles that signal your brain to release the calming hormone dopamine, which can substantially reduce the feelings of stress. Even walking barefoot on soft carpeting, grass or any other plush surface can serve the purpose.

6. Indulge in quick bursts of exercise like rapid dancing, bowling or skipping for few minutes, since such activities boost production of serotonin and norepinephrine - two mood elevating hormones that help your brain stay clearer and calmer during times of high stress.

7. Magnesium ( Essential Mineral) is a powerful, natural tranquilizer and naturally relaxes muscles, lowers anxiety levels and even improves sleep quality. So make sure your diet / supplement provides you plenty of this nutrient.

8. Practice meditation and Yogic breathing techniques like 'Pranayama' daily. These are also very useful tools in combating stress.
